This past April, the Biscayne National Park received a “REALLY BIG CHECK” from the Florida Lighthouse Foundation’s Gene Oakes Lighthouse Grant Fund and the Florida Keys Reef Lights Foundation to be used toward saving Florida’s Fowey Rocks Lighthouse.

The $35,000 check was from a grant that the Florida Reef Lights Foundation (FRLF) received from the Florida Lighthouse Foundation (FLA), which included 5% of that amount being put up by FRLF. The money will be used by the Biscayne Bay National Park, which has owned the lighthouse since October of 2012, to replace the dead Bulk Anode which helps stop erosion, and to replace the broken tension rod. This will buy time for the lighthouse.

Built in 1878, the Fowey Rocks Lighthouse is about ten miles south of the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Jefferson Brown, one of the assistant lighthouse keepers of Fowey Rocks Lighthouse, went on to serve on the Florida Supreme Court from 1917 to 1925 where he served as the Chief Justice.

Shown on a boat with the “Really Big Check” are, left to right, Ken Smith, President of the Florida Lighthouse Association; Eric S. Martin, President of the Florida Keys Reef Lights Foundation; Charles “Chuck” Lawson of Biscayne National Park; and Brian Carlstrom, Superintendent of Biscayne National Park. The Fowey Rocks Lighthouse can be seen behind them.
