For the second time, a prospective owner of Ohio’s Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse has defaulted on their agreement to purchase the lighthouse at auction. Citing financial difficulties, Scott Monroe of Seabrook, Texas, who had won the government auction with a high bid of $85,200 backed out of the deal and forfeited his $12,000 deposit.

Businessman Jerome Osborne, who had the won the lighthouse at a previous auction, for $77,000, backed out of the deal after a dispute with the Army Corps of Engineers over the breakwater that goes to the lighthouse, which is owned by the Corps. Osborne also forfeited his deposit, which was $10,000.

If this continues, the government could make a ton of money on forfeited auction deposits. The government said the lighthouse will again be put up for auction; however a date has yet to be determined. (Photograph by Dale Wendell.)
