This view of the Oregon’s Umpqua River Lighthouse at night and from inside the magnificent Fresnel lens will show you what the Coast Guard wants to do away with.

Only the public’s efforts can stop this from happening.

We have received a number of letters from Lighthouse Digest subscribers who are dead set against the Coast Guard removing the lens from Umpqua River Lighthouse. Unfortunately, because of space we can’t print them all. However, this excerpt from a letter from Shirley Bertschinger sums it up, “I live in the desert of Nevada. When things in life don’t always go as we had hoped, a visit to this place always brings me the solitude that I need to help me through the troubled times. I hope the Coast Guard will think about this and not destroy the beauty and the history of this lighthouse. It is truly a shame that that so much of the history involving lighthouses has been and still is being destroyed. I pray this will not happen to the Umpqua River Lighthouse.”

You can help by writing an impassioned appeal to ask the federal government to stop the Coast Guard from removing the lens from Umpqua River Lighthouse in Reedsport, Oregon and leave it operational in the historic lighthouse. Write to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, 911 N.E. 11th Ave., Suite 630, Portland, OR 97232.
