After being dark for four months, North Carolina’s Ocracoke Lighthouse was again shining its beacon to sea this past March.

The 1823 lighthouse received significant restoration during the project which included repairs to the historic metalwork, new glass in the lantern room, and lightning protection measures to the structure.

The 1860 Fresnel lens remained in the lighthouse during the restoration work protected in a specially designed enclosure. (Photograph courtesy of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.)
