In the days of the lighthouse keeper, most lighthouse keepers or family members had pets of one sort or another. However, from the numerous stories found in the pages of time, it appears that dogs were the most popular. In fact the heroic deeds of many lighthouse dogs have been widely written about over the years, such as Spot at Owls Head Lighthouse in Maine. But, a couple of events in the lives of two dogs at Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine may be the most unusual of all.
Frank Hilt, who was the head lighthouse keeper at Portland Head Light from 1929 to 1944, owned a chow named Sue that earned a reputation as a good story for any reporter, but was even more so marveled upon by the veterinarians of the time. . .
