Cape Lookout To Celebrate

North Carolina’s Cape Lookout Lighthouse will be hosting its 150th Birthday Celebration on November 1. In advance of the celebration the National Park Service is looking for photographs of lighthouse keepers and their family members that served and lived at the lighthouse. Grosse Isle To Be Restored

After three years of planning, Michigan’s Grosse Ile Channel Front Range Lighthouse will get some much needed restoration work. The current work will be on the exterior of the tower only. The lighthouse is surrounded by private property and is not accessible to the public.

Overfalls Back

The Overfalls Lightship is now back in Lewes, Delaware after extensive restoration to its hull. Plans now call for a new slip to be built for a permanent home for the historic light vessel.

Lighthouse Robbery

Rare Spanish coins were stolen from New York’s Horton Point Lighthouse during the East End Lighthouses Long Island Lighthouse Challenge. Valued at $1,800 the coins were taken from an unlocked display case inside the old lighthouse. The coins date back to the mid to late 1700s and are the only documented Spanish treasure found and recovered from Long Island waters.

Historian David Stick Dies

We are saddened to report on the passing of noted historian and author David Stick. Stick was a pioneer in researching the Outer Banks of North Carolina and many of his books were groundbreakers that paved the waved for future historians. In his lifetime he amassed a massive collection of historical documents and books about the Outer Banks. His collection is now at the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo, North Carolina. He started writing about the history of the Outer Banks when he was a teenager. Some of his books included; Graveyard of the Atlantic, Shipwrecks of the North Carolina Coast; Bald Head, a History of Smith Island and Cape Fear; The Outer Banks of North Carolina 1584-1958; North Carolina Lighthouses and The Cape Hatteras Seashore. On June 15 a Memorial Service was held for him at the Pavillion at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. We thank him for his major role in helping to preserve lighthouse history. His work and research will remain with us forever. U.S. Lighthouse Society Anniversary

The United States Lighthouse Society, founded by former Coastguardsman Wayne Wheeler will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. Some celebrations have already taken place and others will be held on August 23rd in St. Joseph, Michigan and September 19th in Los Angeles, California.
