The next issue of the United States Postal Service's series of lighthouse postage stamps to be released later this year will be the Gulf Coast Series. The five lighthouse postage stamps to be released in July, in the order of which they are shown, will be of the Matagorda Island Lighthouse in Texas, Sabine Pass Lighthouse in Louisiana, Biloxi Lighthouse in Mississippi, Sand Island Lighthouse in Alabama and Fort Jefferson Lighthouse, which is also known as Garden Key Lighthouse in Florida.
Another new postage stamp to be released at a ceremony at the American Philatelic Society Stamp Show in Pittsburgh, PA on August 6 will be the ninth in the American Treasures series, from a painting by Edward Hopper, named The Long Leg, done in the 1930s. This stamp featuring the Long Point Lighthouse on Cape Cod Massachusetts as it once appeared with the keeper's house, which is no longer standing. Today the lighthouse is licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation under the care of its Cape Cod chapter.

Although this is wonderful news for the groups associated with these lighthouses as lighthouse aficionados everywhere, the United States Postal Service has still neglected to issue a postage stamp honoring the United States Lighthouse Service or some of the famous people associated with our nation's lighthouses. We've certainly written about it enough times. A number of years ago we conducted a nationwide petition drive, but very few lighthouse groups helped with it. Regrettably the number of petitions received fell far short. The time to honor the men and women and the organization behind it, which left us a lighthouse legacy, is long overdue.
