Wanton “Jagger,” G. Chase of who wrote a book about his childhood years at Rhode Island’s Rose Island Lighthouse passed away this past December, just a few short months shy of his 100th birthday.

Wanton Chase’s grandfather, Charles Curtis at ...

At the time when his book, now out of print, was published, Chase, then 92 years old, was the oldest living person with first hand knowledge and memories of life at the lighthouse. As a sickly young child his parents had sent him to live with his grandfather, lighthouse keeper Charles Curtis, where they thought the salt air would be good for his health. It wasn’t discovered until years later that his problem was actually caused by being born with only one lung.
