Nearly every land based as well as most island lighthouses had pets. This old image came from a photo album in an estate sale and was labeled on the back "lighthouse dog," and hand-written under the photo were the words "The South Light Dog."

Although the photograph has faded with age, clearly visible in the background is Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island, Rhode Island. We don't know the name of the dog or what year the photograph was taken. If any of our readers can help us out with some detective work to supply us the with the dogs name or the keeper's name it would be appreciated.

If you belong to a lighthouse organization or are a descendant of lighthouse and have any photographs to share with us of pets of lighthouse keepers, we'd love to be able to publish them and share with our readers.

Duplicate photos can be mailed to us at Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630 or high-resolution images can be e-mailed to us at editor@LighthouseDigest.com
