Receiving a send off by United States Senator Susan Collins of Maine approximately 60 people braved a trip to an offshore lighthouse in Boothbay Harbor, Maine to witness history in the making at the Cuckolds Lighthouse.
Not only did the group get to tour the historic light station, they witnessed the flag of the United States of America being hoisted for the first time since the station was automated and the lighthouse keepers were removed back in the mid 1970's.
This was one of a few major steps that have recently been taken to reclaim the lighthouse and restore it as a site for educational and recreational purposes. Although the nonprofit trying to save the lighthouse was well underway in its fund raising and planning stages to save the lighthouse their big day happened with the first big step on May 8 when the ownership was transferred to the Cuckolds Fog Signal and Light Station Council. The second big step was when the Coast Guard installed a new modern beacon in the tower of the lighthouse, which was actually completed on the same day that the flag-raising event took place.
