Maine's Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, the only lighthouse to ever appear on American money, has received a $50,000 grant from Lowe's and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The grant, coupled with the funds already raised by the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, brings the group closer to the $100,000 needed to do major restoration work this year on the lighthouse. But, they are still $20,000 short of the goal and the money must be raised in the next several months or they risk losing the $50,000 grant, which requires that the current phase of the restoration project be completed in the autumn months.

In announcing the grant, Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation said, "Lowe's has been an exemplary steward of our nation's history, and we're delighted to partner with the company to fund deserving projects."

The nearly 175-year-old lighthouse is one of the most visited and photographed lighthouses in all of New England. The lighthouse tower is managed by the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation while the Friends of the Fisherman's Museum manage the keeper's house, which is owned by the Town of Bristol.

The actual park at the lighthouse site is managed by the Town of Bristol that charges an admission fee, per person, to enter the park, while the "Friends," group keeps the tower open to the public free of charge. Unfortunately, the town of Bristol, while making money off admission fees, has to date, declined to make, or offer, any contributions toward restoring the historic lighthouse tower.
