Over the years, so many photographs have been discovered of unknown lighthouse keepers, primarily because they never wrote their names or put captions on the back of the photographs.

Like many people today, you may think you will always know the names of the people in the images, but as time goes on, that information becomes lost and forgotten.

This image, discovered by Carl Sloan, does not have the name of the keeper but it does offer a clue. The board of the photograph is embossed with the name of the photographer, which is either J. C. Dalph or J. C. Dolph of Southwest Harbor, Maine. This would probably indicate the photo is of a keeper, perhaps at Petit Manan, Bear Island, Bass Harbor or one of the other lighthouses in that area. He also could have been the keeper of the old Lighthouse Depot in Southwest Harbor.

There is a K on the lapel, which would indicate he was a Head Keeper, and his watch shows a Masonic emblem surrounded by a horseshoe.

If any of our readers can help identify this keeper, please contact us at Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 68, Wells, ME 04090 or email Editor@LighthouseDigest.com.
