Galloo Island Light Station in the 1970s. ...

In the March 2006 edition of Lighthouse Digest, there was a notation in the Keeper’s Korner that the Galloo Island Lighthouse had been sold on the eBay auction site for $205,100. The island lighthouse is located about a dozen miles off shore of Sackets Harbor in upstate New York, on Lake Ontario. The sellers of the property originally gained ownership earlier this decade through a government auction and have since been trying to resell it for $295,000.

A local realtor had the property listed and put on eBay for the current owners. According to the realtor, in New York State, eBay winnings for real estate are not valid until an actual acceptance of a written purchase offer is done. They actually contacted the top three bidders, but the owners were not able to reach an agreeable offer with any of them.

The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the automated, solar-powered light on the tower, but they have nothing to do with the keeper’s quarters, which have not been occupied for more than 30 years. It would be considered a real “fixer-upper.”

The realtor went on to say that many inquires are still being received, but the owners had no interest in re-listing. They said they were going to explore making their own website to market the lighthouse.
