This rare photo of a United States Lighthouse Service vessel was recently uncovered while doing research on Wisconsin’s Cana Island Lighthouse.

This type of vessel was probably used generally at larger light stations, as a tender for small harbor buoy and at Lighthouse Depots. Various types of these vessels are featured in the book United States Lighthouse Service Tenders 1840-1939 by Douglas Peterson.

Barely visible on the bow of the boat are the letters USLHS. Three of the people in the photo are shown wearing the uniform of the U.S. Lighthouse Service.

This story appeared in the July 2006 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
