We were recently notified by Bruce Robie of Washington state that when he went to visit the lighthouses of Cleveland, Ohio, one of them was gone. From his photograph, we were clearly able to view the Cleveland West Breakwater Lighthouse, but as can be seen from the photo, the Cleveland East Pierhead Lighthouse is nowhere to be seen.

The Cleveland East Pierhead Lighthouse from a ...

This is big news to the lighthouse community. For some reason or another, the lighthouse community as a whole was unaware of it and no one ever notified the lighthouse media. After sending numerous e-mails around, the answer came from Washington, D.C. and not from the Cleveland Coast Guard. It seems the lighthouse was removed to allow the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers to perform work on the pier. The report stated the lighthouse would be put back after the pier work is completed.

Wow! This is big news and no one bothered to send us photographs of the lighthouse being removed, which in itself is of major historical significance especially since this is the site of previous lighthouses which were removed and never brought back. Hopefully, someone will come forward with photographs of the lighthouse being removed and again when it is reinstalled.
