This vintage original press photo, dated July 9, 1947, recently came into the possession of the American Lighthouse Foundation. We don’t know what newspapers it appeared in but Ed Peterson took the photograph.

The caption reads: “Lighthouse keeping where the sea lions raise their families. Ano Nuevo Island, California. U. S. Coast Guard Quartermaster Walter Hake, his wife Dorothy and their daughter Lynn Mary. He heads a small group of Coast Guardsmen who look after the lighthouse on this island some 60 miles south of San Francisco, CA. It is here that the stellar Sea Lions have their rockery.”

Unfortunately, the lighthouse at Ano Nuevo no longer stands, having been destroyed many years ago. The photo will now become part of the permanent archives of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

This story appeared in the October 2005 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
