This advertisement sponsored by the Save the Surface Committee, representing the Paint, Varnish, and Allied Interests appeared in the Saturday Evening Post on June 12, 1920.

It is obvious that this advertisement appeared in the heyday of lighthouses. The ad says,

“Did you ever see a lighthouse going to ruin? Did you ever see one needing paint? Winter and summer they stand out on the most exposed locations absolutely at the mercy of the weather except for one thing - their protective coating.”

Obviously, once many lighthouses were abandoned during automation, they quickly began to deteriorate.

Can you identify the lighthouse in this advertisement? If you can, e-mail Dee@LHDigest.com or send a lighthouse postcard with your answer to Calendar Contest, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 68, Wells, ME 04090. We will randomly pick ten names from the correct email answers and send the winners a 2005 lighthouse calendar. All entries must be received by January 1, 2005.

This story appeared in the December 2004 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
