Photo Caption:

Cockspur Island Lighthouse from a Civil War era photograph from the archives of Lighthouse Digest. Whether the lantern room was removed before or during the Civil War is unclear, but the area was the scene of fierce fighting between north and south troops. At some point the lantern was replaced at the top of the tower. The buildings shown here are long gone and the station was abandoned by the Lighthouse Service in 1909.
