When Joseph G. Hindley retired as the light keeper of Nobska Point Lighthouse on November 3, 1972, it was believed that he was the last civilian Coast Guard lighthouse keeper in New England who had started his career with the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Hindley had a long and distinguished lighthouse career. He had previously served as a 2nd assistant and then 1st assistant keeper at Whale Rock Lighthouse in Rhode Island from 1929 to 1931, as the assistant keeper and then the head keeper at Butler Flats Lighthouse in Massachusetts from 1931 to 1946, then at Sakonnet Lighthouse in Rhode Island from 1946 to 1948, and as the keeper of the Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts from 1948 to 1956. He is shown here with his wife Charlotte at Nobska Point Lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
