Although the York family knew that the Lighthouse Inspector might be on board, it was always an exciting time when they saw the U.S. Lighthouse Service Tender Ilex steaming to the island. As well as bringing food supplies and newspapers, there was almost always a fresh supply of books and the welcome visits of some of crew from the ship.
