This 1832 Circulator from the Fifth Auditor of the Treasury’s Office was signed by Stephen Pleasonton, who was considered the General Superintendent of Light Houses. For 32 years he was in charge of all United States Lighthouses. He is also the man who saved the Declaration of Independence and other valuable government documents from being burned by the British in the War of 1812. (Lighthouse Digest collection.)
