Photo Caption:

Representatives from Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso), the U.S. Coast Guard, and possibly the National Park Service, at the site of where Esso No. 1 Test Well was to be drilled within sight of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The only man identified in this photo is K.D. White, fourth from the right, who was in charge of Standard Oil’s East Coast Exploration. As a point of interest, Esso renamed itself Exxon in 1973 and in 1999 they merged with Mobil to create Exxon/Mobil. (Photo courtesy John Havel.)
