Seaman Ivan Lavigne by the radio beacon equipment at Halfway Rock Lighthouse in 1953 that broadcasted the identifying three dashes of Halfway Rock Lighthouse which ships would use to take bearings and establish their position. The men got a real workout one night when the automatic mechanism failed and, taking turns, they had to stand in front of the gear all night punching the timer ahead manually – once every three minutes.
