By lighthouse standards, the 1908 Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse had a short life. Powerful storms that hit its exposed location took a toll on the wooden structure, and when a work crew came to dismantle the wooden structure and build a new lighthouse, keeper Robert C. Taylor wrote, “April 12, 1926 – The gas light was lit and the vapor lamp was cut out – building new lighthouse.” Taylor was referring to the fact that the light in the 1908 tower was extinguished and replaced by the beacon that stood atop the temporary skeleton structure. Interestingly, Robert C. Taylor, who had been the first keeper to live in the 1908 Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse, was also the first keeper to live in the 1926 Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse. (U. S.
