Capt. Stephen Andrew Cohee, who was the last lighthouse keeper to serve at Pooles Island Lighthouse in Maryland, served there from the late 1800s to 1917. Cohee along with his wife, Anna Meekins, raised eight children on the island. Since the government never provided enough food, their light station resembled a farm where they raised some crops as well as chickens and hogs. They also had their share of family pets. Living by the water they also had an unlimited supply of fish and crabs to eat. They also earned extra money by selling rockfish to the markets at Chesapeake City.
