The Lighthouse Tender Azalea is shown here from a photograph taken by N. L. Stebbins (1847-1922) on December 3, 1891. Originally built as an Inspection Tender, it was commissioned on June 25, 1891. The vessel was later painted black. Notice the U.S. Lighthouse Service pennant flying from the rear mast. In 1932, the Lighthouse Service claimed the ship was beyond economical repair and it was replaced by the lighthouse tender Myrtle. However, apparently the U.S. Navy felt differently and they eventually purchased the ship and renamed it the USS Christiana (IX-80) and it served during World War II as a seaplane tender in the British West Indies. On February 25, 1946, the Navy sold the vessel to the Wilson Line to be used as a passenger ship. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
