This 1930s drawing of the newly completed Gray’s Reef Lighthouse was done by R. E. Yates of the United States Lighthouse Service. R. E. Yates should not be confused with J.T. Yates who was the superintendent of the 3rd Lighthouse District of the United States Lighthouse Service. This image that appeared in National Geographic Magazine was titled, “Even Lighthouses Have Gone Modernistic.” The towers diaphone fog signal and radio beacon were synchronized so that a vessel could determine its distance away by noting the time it takes for the sound to travel through the air. The Gray’s Reef Lighthouse was one of six lighthouses built with WPA funds from the Great Deal of 1933 to help take the United States out of the Great Depression. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
