Coast Guard keepers at Michigan’s Gray’s Reef Lighthouse await the supply vessel in 1966. One of the men now gets leave when a relief keeper comes to replace him. Because the shipping lanes were closed in the winter months, Gray’s Reef Lighthouse was only staffed ten months a year and was closed in January, February and the first couple of weeks in March of each year. However, because of their hermit living conditions, the men were generally given choice assignments during their months away from the lighthouse. (2012 MLive and The Grand Rapids Press.
