Chief Herman Claus, OIC, U.S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation, Bristol, RI, had the honor of raising the flag at Pomham Rocks Lighthouse on June 6, 2005, 31 years, nearly to the day, when it was taken down by Coast Guardsman Dennis Tardiff, when the lighthouse was decommissioned on June 5, 1974. The 2005 flag raising ceremony was in honor of the lighthouse being turned over to the American Lighthouse Foundation to begin the restoration of the lighthouse. The only significant difference from the two flag ceremonies was that, instead of the Coast Guard ensign flag that was flown under the United States flag at the lighthouse in 1974, the 2005 ceremony used the flag of the old United States Lighthouse Service.
