Over time, the remains of the fort at Castle Pinckney became overgrown with brush and trees.Recently, the Historical Charleston Foundation, in collaboration with several government agencies, conducted a controlled burn on the island to clear away the brush so that historic documentation can be made of the fort and also to allow for the easier nesting of birds.
