For many years Don Chencho Rosales, with his two-wheel cart being pulled by a donkey, was extremely popular with the tourists who visited Port Isabel. And, many were surprised to learn that as a teenager, he, reportedly, had helped to build the lighthouse in 1852. Many people would offer him money to pose in front of the lighthouse for a photo. It is said that he rarely accepted any payment. While his story may have been fabricated by him, it is now part of the popular folklore of the Port Isabel Lighthouse. When Don Chencho Rosales died on February 10, 1950, he was reportedly 100 years old, or 115 years old, or 118 years old, or 120 years old; depending on which part of the legend you believe.
