Barna Norton served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander. After the war, he began his tour boat service to take bird watchers and others out to the remote Machias Seal Island Lighthouse. For most of his life he was active in trying to prove that the island belongs to the United States and not Canada.
