It was reported that when a 1947 hurricane tilted the lighthouse to such an angle that it might topple over, Wood built his own pulley system and righted the lighthouse by himself. Then, while keeping it elevated on trestles, he rebuilt the lower portion of the structure. This vintage postcard shows that the only thing that saved the lighthouse from toppling were the branches of a tree. However, the lighthouse was not as lucky during Hurricane Camille in 1969 when it simply disappeared. (Courtesy of Edmond Boudreaux of the Mississippi Coast Historical Society.)
