Photo Caption:

Jamie and Andrew Wyeth came out to Southern Island to paint together in 1962, 16 years before the Wyeths bought the island and Tenants Harbor Lighthouse. Andrew painted the lighthouse tower and keeper’s house while Jamie chose this angle looking up at the bottom of the fog bell to create his Bell Tower watercolor. Note the chips in the bell rim from decades of exposure to the elements and the chain from the clapper to the inside of the tower that would have been connected to the geared mechanism to strike it.
