Andrew Wyeth stands in the lantern room of Tenants Harbor Lighthouse in 1981, striking a mirrored pose in tandem with the bronze bust of a woman created by sculptor John Rogers around the turn of the 20th century. This “Rogers Figure” was purchased by Andrew’s wife, Betsy, and could easily represent all women who have ever gazed seaward, patiently waiting for their men to safely return home, or even all female lighthouse keepers who dutifully kept their lights burning to protect those at sea. The bust is still in place today, ever vigilant, these 40 years later. (©Victoria B. Wyeth)
