The Hooper Strait Lighthouse was built 1879 in Tangier Sound in the Chesapeake Bay to replace an earlier 1827 structure that had been destroyed by ice on January 11, 1877. In 1954, when the lighthouse was automated, George H. Leikam Sr. became the last person to serve there as a lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse was then abandoned and left to the elements. In November of 1966, shortly before its planned destruction, the lighthouse was saved and moved to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland where it is now open to the public.
