Jerome M. Robinson, known as “Cap,” who joined the Lighthouse Service in 1909, served as the head keeper of the Calumet Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse for 25 years before becoming the head keeper at the Sheboygan Lighthouse in 1930.
Guy B. Skinner, Superintendent of the 12th Lighthouse District, awarded keeper Robinson a U.S. Lighthouse Service Efficiency Flag for the best kept lighthouse in the district during the year 1936. Robinson told the Sheboygan Press that he gave considerable credit to his assistant, Charles A. Linsmeier, for getting the award. Keeper Robinson said that he had been competing with 53 other light stations in the district and most of them employed three to five men.
In 1941, Jerome Robinson was demoted and transferred to become the 1st assistant keeper at Wisconsin’s Pottawatomie Lighthouse. Born on January 25, 1880, Jerome M. Robinson died on January 27, 1942 while he was visiting his daughter in Chicago. In reporting his death, The Sheboygan Press stated that he and his wife, Anna Foley, whom he had married on November 22, 1902, had many friends in Sheboygan and had been reluctant to leave the community for his forced transfer to the Pottawatomie Lighthouse.
