In 1941 Nelson S. Atherton was appointed the keeper of the Smith Point Lighthouse at the entrance to the Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. In 1943 he voluntarily left the lighthouse to serve on active duty in World War II with the Coast Guard Reserves and served in the South Pacific on the Violet LT134, and the USCGC Verbena. In 1946 he returned to Smith Point Lighthouse as the civilian head keeper and served there until he retired in 1965. In 2005 the government sold Smith Point Lighthouse at auction for $170,000. The private owners have since restored the lighthouse.
