The first Marblehead Lighthouse tower is shown here with the lantern that replaced the bird cage style lantern. Interestingly, the enclosed walkway to protect the keeper in inclement weather did not extend all the way to the keeper’s house. If you look closely, you will see a lighthouse keeper with outstretched arms, probably showing off his accomplishment of the completion of the erection of the 100-foot-tall mast with a light on it. The original light tower shown here to the far left was demolished in the 1880s. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
