Photo Caption:

An early portrait of Carl R. Holt and Louisa Carsilla Holt from a photograph probably taken slightly before the time that their father, Allen C. Holt, became the keeper of Nash Island Lighthouse, where he served from 1910 to 1916. Later in life, they recalled that they spent much of their island life beachcombing, playing cards and reading out-loud. For a time, they also assisted their father in his other duties as a Bird Warden counting the number of nests and eggs of endangered seabirds. Carl R. Holt was born July 20, 1902 and he died in 1977 in Florida. Louisa Carsilla Holt was born on Sept. 17, 1900; she died in 1979 in Bar Harbor, Maine. (Courtesy Mike Gross.)
