Photo Caption:

This newspaper wire photo dated March 17, 1946 shows Fort Gratiot Lighthouse keeper William A. Wilkinson at the fog machinery. The newspaper caption with the photo read, “Fog at the lower end of Lake Huron, where the shipping lanes narrow to enter St. Clair River, means immediate danger to the long freighters with valuable cargo. At the first settling of fog near the Fort Gratiot Light Station, fog horn machinery (shown here) is started, and the characteristic blast warns pilots of their location.” (Lighthouse Digest archives)
