Approaching the St. George Reef Light by helicopter. (Photo by Kiera Giles) When completed in 1892 at a cost of $704,000, it was the most expensive lighthouse ever built by the United States Lighthouse Service. Its original cost would be the equivalent today of $19.5 million. The lighthouse was abandoned in 1975. In 1988 the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed to try and save the lighthouse. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2019
