Martin Francis Cody, Sr. was born in Ennis, Ireland in November, 1859. According to family knowledge, he came to America with his brother when both of them were quite young. They split up, with Martin staying in the New York area to be a farm boy while his brother went to Pennsylvania to work in the mines where, unfortunately, he died in a mining accident a short time later. In 1890, Martin entered lighthouse service at the Statue of Liberty for the next 12 years, making him the second longest serving keeper. Martin passed away March 17, 1927 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, New York with his wife, Elizabeth. (Findagrave)
