The year following the rescue, all the soldiers and Max Wetherill who had participated in saving Charles and Dora Miller from their icy fate, received a special lifesaving medal by an act of Congress inscribed: “In Testimony of Heroic Deeds in Saving Life from the Perils of the Sea.…for Gallant Service in rescuing two persons from drowning January 18, 1893.” The solid silver medal shows an angel throwing a lifeline to a drowning man. This particular medal pictured, was presented to rescuer Pvt. Denis Barry and sold for $1700 in a London auction last year. (Dix Noonan Webb, Ltd.)
