This photo of Charles Miller next to one of the cannons on Bedloe’s Island was taken on September 1, 1891. Even though Charles noted in his journal that on this date he took Dora up to the torch and “gave her a good kissing,” she refused to have her photo taken with him, opting for a group and solo portrait shot only that day. Notice the buoy and spar insignia on Charles’ hat that was originally worn by lighthouse depot employees. (Courtesy of Dana Kenn)
