Capt. Alexander Macomb Wetherill, Sr., who was the commander of Fort Wood during 1893 and assisted in Charles and Dora Miller’s icy rescue, was a great Spanish-American war hero. He died along with several members of his Company A, 6th Infantry who led the charge up San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. (Harper’s Weekly 1898)
