Joseph Harris Jr., shown here as a young man in his Civil War uniform, became keeper of the Baileys Harbor Range Lights in 1875. He later went on to be the light keeper at Green Island Light in Wisconsin from 1881 to 1882; Grosse Point Lighthouse in Illinois from 1882 to 1885; and then at the Dunlap Reef Range Lighthouse in Wisconsin from 1885 to 1890. He left the Lighthouse Service in 1890 to accept a job as the Postmaster in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and he later served as the town’s mayor. (Photo courtesy Door County Maritime Museum.)
