Photo Caption:

Completed in 1796, the Montauk Lighthouse at the east end of Long Island, New York was raised by 14 feet in 1860. The tower was painted all white at this time. The reddish brown band that you see on the tower today was added to the lighthouse in 1899. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
