Our cover photo, taken during the Polar Vortex of 2019, features Michigan’s ice covered Grand Haven South Pierhead Outer Lighthouse with the Grand Haven South Pierhead Inner Lighthouse in the distance. Pete Lerro of Lerro Productions, who took the photo on January 30, 2019, said the temperature at the time was zero and the wind chill was minus 19o F. If the brutal cold weren’t bad enough, the trip out was extremely difficult and somewhat dangerous hiking over several hundred yards of hollow ice leading to the towers.
