The fog bell tower at Maine’s Fort Point Lighthouse as it appeared during the time that Arthur Mitchell was the lighthouse keeper. In 1936, newspaper reporter Henry Buxton asked how keeper Mitchell knew to wake up and ring the fog bell if the fog comes in during the night. Arthur Mitchell replied, “That is something I cannot explain, only I know that every keeper seems to know subconsciously that fog is in and does wake up and set the bell going. Sometimes I am up five or six times a night to ring the bell.” (Photo courtesy Arthur E. Curtis.)
